FAQ

How far can you fly?
We have to ensure we fly within Visual Line Of Site (VLOS) of our drones at all times. Maximum altitude is 122 m (400 feet) and 500 m horizontal from the pilot. These are standard permissions allowed by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

What weather conditions can be flow in?
We are unable to fly in precipitation (rain/snow/hail etc). We do monitor weather condition leading up to an operation and will re-schedule if necessary. Our drones are able to operate in winds up to 20 mph though the operation may have to stop if conditions are deemed unsafe by the pilot.

Can you fly indoors?
Yes, as long as there is adequate space, our drones are fitted with multiple sensors to ensure safe interior and exterior flight.

Can you fly at night?
Yes, though flight distances may be reduced.

What are the current flight restrictions posed on commercial drones by the CAA?
The CAA Air Navigation Order 2016 (CAP 393) prevents us from flying;
– over or within 50 m of any congested area,
– over or within 150 m of an organised open-air assembly of more that 1000 persons,
– within 50 meters of any vessel, vehicle or structure which is not under control of the pilot,
– within 30 meters of any people unless under control of the pilot.
– within 1 km of the boundaries of specific aerodromes unless permission has been granted from Air Traffic Control.

What qualifications do our drone pilots have?
All HDS Aerial Surveys Ltd drone pilots have the PfCO permission from the CAA to operate an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (drone) for commercial operations.

Is Insurance required?
Yes, insurance is required for any commercial operation, depending on the operation we arrange  cover from £1m to £10m.

Please note drone owners without PfCO permission cannot charge for commercial operations or gain insurance cover for drone flights.
